The Singida Gold Mine, also known as “Singida,” is situated in Central Tanzania’s Ikungi District in the Singida Region, some 180 kilometres northwest of the country’s capital, Dodoma, and 620 kilometres west-northwest of Dar es Salaam. One of the safest gold mining operations among its counterparts is Singida, which is currently an open-pit operation. Plans are in place to turn Singida into a hybrid operation that includes underground mining in order to unlock additional value from the deposit in light of recent resource discoveries.
Open-Pit Operations: Singida uses a contractor-mining approach in which Shanta Gold provides technical control and the mining contractor supplies and runs all of the mining equipment. This covers accountability for geological interpretation, survey assistance, mine design, and mine planning.
Processing: This straightforward and traditional metallurgical circuit uses tried-and-true crushing and milling methods, followed by carbon-in-leach (CIL) and gravity gold extraction, which yields strong gold recoveries of about 95%. In H1 2025, a process plant upgrade was finished, doubling the mill’s annual throughput capacity to 730,000 tonnes. A single HDPE-lined tailings storage facility (TSF), built and designed in accordance with international best practices, is used to handle tailings.
Power Supply: Two emergency standby diesel generators are used as a backup to ensure operational continuity, with the majority of power coming from the national grid (TANESCO).
Water: Singida gets its water needs from a number of sources, including TSF water recycling, collected rainwater, and several approved boreholes.
Exploration and Growth: Singida has initiated a vigorous exploration effort since the mine’s successful commissioning in 2023, which has led to a notable increase in mineral resources. A significant step towards the operation’s future underground development has been taken with the declaration of a maiden subterranean resource at the Gold Tree deposit. In order to facilitate long-term expansion, a number of fresh prospecting licenses have also been obtained. With the goal of prolonging the mine’s life into 2033 and facilitating the shift to a combined open-pit and subterranean operation, exploration activities are still ongoing.
